Winter 2002 Currents

SRWC Youth Education Update

Last fall over 500 middle and high school age students and teachers explored the Saugus River Watershed through field and classroom programs featuring natural resources of Town Line Brook and Reedy Meadows. Students discovered their local watershed by performing water quality tests, learning plant and animal adaptations, participating in sensory awareness activities, comparing soil samples, examining animal signs and building a watershed model.
Everett High School students evaluate habitat at Town Line Brook, Fall 2001.

As a direct result of this program, Deborah Adam’s 6th grade class at the Linden School in Malden has adopted the Town Line Brook walking path. Students will perform weekly cleanups and monthly water quality testing at this site for the rest of the school year.

SRWC will also offer new Spring 2002 Marsh Ecology education programs at Rumney Marsh, Reedy Meadows and Camp Nihan for middle and high school age students. Additional Town Line Brook programs will also be hosted. Through these free programs, students will discover the differences and similarities between fresh and salt-water marshes. Students will learn to identify and explain the adaptations of some of the key invertebrate, fish and plant species living within these marshes. These programs are also open to local scout and youth organizations within the Saugus River Watershed.
