Dissolved oxygen levels have gone from an average of 6.01 mg/l in 1998 to an average of 7.34 mg/l during 2000. During the past two years DO levels have met the state’s criteria for habitat for a fresh water fishery greater than 90% of the time. The higher DO levels are good news for ongoing efforts to restore fisheries to the watershed. Unfortunately, pollution from elevated fecal coliform bacteria continues to be a problem throughout the watershed. During 2000, only 40% of the samples collected met the state’s water quality standard for swimming, while 70% of the samples met the boating standard. The most significant pollution levels occured following heavy rainfall indicating that stormwater pollution and potential sewage surcharges are a problem. Shute Brook in Saugus and Strawberry Brook in Lynn experienced the highest levels of bacteria. A full report of results from SRWC’s sampling program will be issued this Spring.
