Help Keep the River Flowing Water Conservation Tips for Garden & Lawn Care
As we enter the dry season, conserving water will help keep adequate flows in the Saugus River throughout the summer months. Here are some tips for saving water when caring for your lawn and garden:-- Mulch planting beds to retain soil moisture and improve soil quality.
-- Water plants with soaker hose or drip irrigation to reduce evaporation and target watering.
-- Capture rainfall in a barrel or cistern and reuse to water gardens and lawns.
-- Avoid use of black plastic in flower beds because it reduces water absorption and increases fertilizer runoff.
-- Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
-- Water lawn only when it needs it. If grass springs back when you walk on it, it does not need watering.
