Water Conservation Tips
--- Repair leaky pipes, toilets, and faucets. A single dripping faucet can waste hundreds of gallons of water per week, depending upon the rate of flow.
--- Install aerators (about $5 each) to reduce faucet water usage by approximately 25%. If water looks bubbly as it comes out of the faucet, you may already have an aerator.
--- Install low-flow shower heads to conserve water. A wide range of low-flow shower heads are available for $25 and under.
--- Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving (saves 4 to 10 gallons per day).
--- Limit shower time (saves 2 to 7 gallons per minute).
--- Run dishwasher only when full (saves up to 15 gallons per load).
--- Wash vegetables and fruit in a basin of water (saves 2 to 4 gallons per day).
--- Keep a pitcher of cold water in the refrigerator instead of running the water from the tap until it gets cold.
--- Run washing machine only when full and adjust water level setting carefully. Consider an energy effecient purchase for your next new washer - look for the Energy Star. Water efficient washers can save more water in one year than the average person drinks in a lifetime.
--- Water lawn in the early morning or evening to avoid excess evaporation. Dont water on a windy, rainy, or very hot day.
--- Plant less grass. Shrubs and ground cover require less maintenance, less water and provide year-round greenery.
--- Apply mulch around flowers, shrubs, vegetables and trees to reduce evaporation, promote plant growth, and control weeds.
--- For gardens and shrubs, use soaker hoses to provide a more efficient slow trickle directly to the roots.
--- Capture and re-use rainwater. Use rain barrels or cisterns to capture rainwater from downspouts for use in your yard.
