RESCO Seeks Expansion

RESCO has announced that it will seek to expand its incineration facilities located along the Saugus River via referendum this Fall. The Saugus River Watershed Council is adamantly opposed to such an expansion because of its negative impact on public health and the natural resources of the watershed.

RESCO’s push for an expansion ignores the fact that there is currently a statewide moratorium on expanding waste incinerators. Unless the moratorium implemented by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is lifted, an expansion is not legally viable at this time.

Although RESCO has offered the Town of Saugus $2 million for the expansion, the Council strongly believes that the environmental costs of such an expansion far outweigh this dollar amount.
