State Halts RESCO Expansion by Upholding Moratorium on Incinerators
In a move that halts the potential expansion of the RESCO facility in Saugus, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection issued a December 2000 decision to keep the statewide moratoruim on new or expanded incinerators in place, while lifting the moratorium for landfills.
The decision responds to concerns raised by the Saugus River Watershed Council and other environmental advocates about the negative impact of incinerators on public health and the environment. Keeping the moratorium in place is an environmental success for the Saugus River watershed because it prevents the RESCO facility from undertaking a major expansion which could have doubled the capacity and associated pollution at the site. Impact of the facility is compounded by the fact that it is located along the Saugus River and surrounded by the Rumney Marsh Area of Critical Environmental Concern.
