Srping 2002 Currents

SRWC Tracks Watershed Projects

SRWC reviews permitting documents, attends public meetings, and submits written comments on many complex projects in the watershed. Two projects that we have been tracking are highlighted below. For copies of our comments on these or other projects, please visit srw@shore.net or call (781) 233-5046.

Boston Street Bridge Reconstruction (Massachusetts Highway Department). SRWC recommended that boater access be increased by raising the bridge at least two feet; work on the bridge avoid key fish spawning periods; and erosion problems be addressed.

Saugus Landfill Capping Project (Town of Saugus). SRWC recommendations include: create a natural buffer zone along the portion of the property that abuts Breakheart Reservation (including restoring wetland areas); test all Central Artery fill material for potential contamination in Boston before it is trucked to Saugus; re-consider capping the landfill at lower elevations to reduce potential environmental impacts; and provide an on-site Clerk of Works to oversee day to day operations to ensure an environmentally sound capping process.
