SRWC Hosts Natural History Events
The Saugus River Watershed Council is hosting several free programs to introduce people to the beauty and natural history of the Saugus River watershed during 2002. These events are geared toward children and adults and provide an excellent opportunity for wildlife viewing and enjoying the outdoors.
During January 2002, 40 people took part in two wildlife safaris where they learned about signs of winter wildlife at Reedy Meadows, a 540-acre freshwater wetland located in Lynnfield, Wakefield and Reading. Town Line Brook Ramble, Sunday, Feb. 3, 1:00 2:30 p.m.
How is the water quality in Town Line Brook? What is being done to improve it? What kind of plants and animals live in and around the brook? Join us as we discover this local resource and learn more about its past, present and future. Town Line Brook is a tidal brook habitat for several wading birds such as great blue herons, sand pipers and egrets. Coyotes are also a frequent visitor to this area.
Directions: Take Route 1 to the Lynn Street, Saugus exit. Take a left off of the exit onto Lynn Street. The (unmarked) entrance for Town Line Brook is in Malden, 1.3 miles on your left just after the Holy Cross Cemetery. Pass the entrance and park on Hadley Street on your right and walk back to entrance.
Signs of Spring, Sunday April 7, 1:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m.
Spring is here! Come celebrate as we explore Camp Nihan looking for skunk cabbage, mourning cloak butterflies and other early signs of spring. Camp Nihan has 47 acres of woodland, marsh and river habitat, making it ideal for nature exploration. This event is co-sponsored by the Metropolitan District Commission.
Directions: Take Route 1 North or South to the Route 129 West exit (Wakefield). Take a right off of the exit. Camp Nihan is on your left after the first traffic light. Drive up the road and park next to the Ranger Cabin.
Pre-registration is required for all programs.
