LWSC to Develop Water Supply Protection Plan

The Lynn Water and Sewer Commission recently received a grant of $45,000 from the Department of Environmental Management’s Source Water Protection Grant Program to develop a Water Supply Protection Plan. The project will be managed by Rick Dawe of LWSC.

The plan will encompass the watershed around the reservoir system including Breeds, Hawkes, Birch, and Walden Ponds. Strategies to project source waters such as Reedy Meadows and Lake Quannapowitt in the upper reaches of the Saugus River watershed will also be part of the plan. Efforts to protect water quality to the water supply system will be environmentally beneficial to the Saugus River watershed which supplies water to the reservoirs.

The Lynn Watershed Protection Team, which includes LWSC, Friends of Lynn Woods, Saugus River Watershed Council, the Metropolitan District Commission, and others, will assist with development of the plan. The underlying goal of the plan is to ensure long-term water quality protection. Strategies for addressing pollution from fertilizers, road salts and oil, will be developed.

In response to the 11 September terrorist attacks, security associated with Lynn’s drinking water supply and treatment system has been significantly increased. With a population of 90,000, the LWSC water supply is categorized by the Department of Environmental Protection as a very large community system.
