Lake Quannapowitt Sediment Study
A study is being conducted to determine the sources of pollutants such as arsenic, lead and hydrocarbons found in the sediments of Lake Quannapowitt, which forms the headwaters of the Saugus River. An analysis of each pollutant’s risk potential is underway now and expected to be reported this Spring.
The study includes reviewing records, conducting field investigation, and analyzing samples for compliance with state and federal environmental protection standards. Preliminary results indicate that hydrocarbons were found in some of the samples sent to the Department of Environmental Protection. During February, boring samples of the sediments were taken and some monitoring wells were put in place.
The $50,000 study is being funded by the Town of Wakefield, and was initiated in response to environmental concerns raised by the Friends of Lake Quannapowitt.
