SRWC Awards $8,400 in Small Grants

The Saugus River Watershed Council recently awarded $8,400 in small grants for projects that will enhance public access, youth education and public awareness of the natural resources of the Saugus River watershed. The goal of the Small Grants Program is to enhance the efforts of other non-profit organizations and communities working throughout the watershed on projects consistent with the mission of the Saugus River Watershed Council. The projects highlighted below received 2001 small grants.

$1,500 - Vitale Park

The Town of Saugus received $1,500 to improve public amenities at Vitale Park along the Saugus River at Ballard Street. These funds will help improve landscaping, signage, and overall park upgrades to be implemented this spring. Improving Vitale Park is a significant enhancement to the Saugus River waterfront.

$2,400 - Camp Nihan Education

A grant of $2,400 was awarded to fund an educational interpreter at the Metropolitan District Commission’s Camp Nihan Education Center. This educator will present a variety of environmental education programs emphasizing the ecology of the Saugus River watershed to children from local schools and community groups.

$2,500 Bike to the Sea Trail

Bike to the Sea, Inc. received $2,500 to fund design and construction drawings of the Lynn Section of the Bike to the Sea Trail. This segment of the trail runs from Boston Street to Neptune Street in Lynn. About .3 miles of this 1.3 mile segment of the trail runs directly along the Saugus River. SRWC’s grant will match other funding from General Electric, Bike to the Sea and other sources for this $50,000 project.

Other Special Donations

  • $1,000 to Friends of Lake Quannapowitt to help fund landscaping improvements at the Gertrude Spaulding Park currently being created along Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield.
