SRWC Launches "Fish Spotter" Program
This year, the Saugus River Watershed Council is launching a new "Fish Spotter" program to begin tracking fish throughout the watershed. The goals of the program are to monitor the status of fisheries and identify when anadromous fish such as alewife, blueback herring or smelt are running up into the Saugus River to spawn.
Volunteer fish spotters will use identification sheets to spot the most common types of fish in the watershed. Even without the formal identification package, we have already received numerous reports of alewives at the dam at Colonial, throughout the Saugus River, and spawning at Camp Nihan pond. In April, over 1,000 yellow perch were spotted trying to get into Lake Quannapowitt. Minnows have been spotted throughout the watershed including in Trifone Brook and Town Line Brook in Revere and Strawberry Brook in Lynn.
If you are interested in participating in the Council's Fish Spotter program, cal 781-233-5046, leave your name, phone number, and address, and we will send you a Fish Spotter package when they are available. Or, if you are already an expert, please forward your fish spotter news to us right away. We plan to involve our water quality volunteers and members, as well as local fishermen, boaters, and other people who spend time on the river.
Leave a message at 781-233-5046 or send email to srw@shore.net.
