Environmental Debate Set for 19 February

The Massachusetts Environmental Collaborative, together with New England Cable News and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, is sponsoring a live Environmental Debate for gubernatorial candidates on Tuesday, 19 February 2002 from 8:00-9:00 p.m. The debate is free and open to the public – so mark your calendars, and plan to come enjoy the show!

In this televised environmental debate, the first of the campaign season, Margie Reedy and/or Chet Curtis, co-anchors of NECN’s News Night, along with a panel of experts, will provide candidates with the opportunity to express their views on Massachusetts environmental issues.

For example, should the state take steps to limit suburban sprawl, as several states around the country have done, or should growth issues be left to cities and towns to manage? What do the candidates propose in light of projections that many Massachusetts communities will run out of water during the coming decade and impacts such events will have on rivers? With the sad legacy of “A Civil Action” in Woburn and breast cancer clusters in several parts of the state, what actions do the candidates propose to deal with hazardous waste and toxic chemicals?

The Kennedy School of Government’s Forum, located at 79 JFK Street, Cambridge, will host this free event. Guests should arrive by 7:30 p.m. to ensure seating before the cameras go live. If you are unable to attend, tune in to News Night on the New England Cable News to learn about the candidates’ positions on protecting our environment.
