Fishing News
This year has been great for fishing on the Saugus River and good catches are expected to continue until the middle of December. During a recent visit to Toms Bait Shop on Ballard Street in Saugus, SRWC Intern Mike Marino spoke with local lobster fisherman Frank Bailey who helps out at the shop. According to Frank, the most plentiful fish being caught in the river are striped bass, blue fish, flounder, and eels.
When asked where the fish are being caught, Frank explained that fishermen use the piers and bridges all along the River. The public landing at Vitale Park and the bridge at Boston Street in Lynn are very popular spots right now. Although many adults are usually found fishing along the river, local children are also getting in on the excitement of hooking a striped bass or blue fish.
In other fishing news, fishermen in the Winthrop area have been catching smelt earlier this year than expected, indicating that the smelt should be making their run into the Saugus River by late October and should be around until the middle of December.
If you havent been fishing yet this year, get out there and see what the Saugus River has to offier!
Special thanks to Frank Bailey and Toms Bait Shop for the fishing update. Thanks also to SRWC member Fred LeBlanc for suggesting that we include a fishing update in the newsletter.
