Winter 2001 Currents

Editorial

During 2001, the Saugus River Watershed Council celebrates its 10th Anniversary of protecting the natural resources of the Saugus River watershed. As we reflect on past successes, the contribution of volunteers over the past decade is compelling.

SRWC volunteers have braved weather, weeds, mud and more to collect and analyze water quality samples throughout the watershed each month. Their efforts have created a reliable, comprehensive monitoring program which tracks progress and identifies water quality hot spots. Since 1991, over 1,000 volunteers have participated in coastal cleanup projects which removed 100+ tons of debris from Lynn, Revere, Saugus, Lynnfield, Wakefield, and other areas.

Several other non-profit, volunteer based organizations have also worked tirelessly to protect the watershed. Through monitoring and advocacy, Friends of Lake Quannapowitt are improving water quality and public access opportunities at the watershed’s headwaters. Friends of Rumney Marsh and Friends of Belle Isle Marsh advocate for protection and restoration of our invaluable salt marshes. Saugus Action Volunteers for the Environment advocate to protect natural areas and resolve pollution problems. Friends of Breakheart Reservation host public programs to increase awareness and protection of the natural resources of Breakheart Reservation. Friends of Lynn Woods are working to protect the diverse natural resources of Lynn Woods Reservation through education and advocacy.

At the same time, volunteers serving on local Conservation Commissions, Planning Boards, and other committees have made lasting individual contributions to protecting the environment throughout the watershed.

Through this collective energy, enthusiasm and commitment from all of the watershed’s volunteers, we can expect to see major progress in environmental protection, public access, and wildlife during the coming decade.
