DEP Commissioner Liss Upholds Decision to Deny Crystal Motors Project

Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Lauren Liss issued a January 2002 decision upholding the Lynnfield Conservation Commission’s denial of the Crystal Motors Express proposed trucking terminal based upon insufficient information. This decision is great news for the Saugus River, and sets an important precedent for upholding decisions of local conservation commissions to protect resource areas.

As previously proposed, the Kimball Lane trucking terminal would have included development within 200 feet of the Saugus River in Lynnfield.

Commissioner Liss concurred with the August 2001 court decision regarding the potential development of Crystal Motors. Because the Department of Environmental Protection’s previous ‘Superseding Order of Conditions’ is no longer valid, the project developer would need to file a new Notice of Intent with the Lynnfield Conservation Commission before proceeding further with the project.
