Viewing the Watershed by Canoe
One of the best ways to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Saugus River and Rumney Marsh is while paddling along in a quiet canoe or kayak. This summer and fall the Council is offering a series of FREE canoe trips to highlight the improving natural resources of the watershed. By canoe, you are likely to spot a variety of wildlife including shore birds such as egrets, black-crowned night herons, red-winged blackbirds, and even osprey.
During July, August and September, we will paddle into Rumney Marsh along the Pines River and its tributaries in Saugus and Revere. This scenic salt marsh provides unique habitat for a wide variety of shorebirds, fish and shellfish. Some canoe experience is required for these trips as we will be dealing with currents from the estuary.
During October, we will host two of our popular Fall Foliage canoe trips along the main stem of the Saugus River. We will paddle leisurely from the Stocker Playground in Saugus to the Hamilton Street bridge and back along the scenic Saugus River. Learn about the rivers natural history, look for birds, and relax while enjoying the beauty of New England foliage.
Many thanks to SRWC member Fred LeBlanc of Saugus who has again volunteered to lead these trips.
