Winter 2002 Currents

Groundbreaking for New
Breakheart Visitor's Center

On 16 January 2002, Bob Durand, Secretary of Environmental Affairs, David B. Balfour, Jr., Commissioner of the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC), State Representative Mark Falzone, James Pelley, Superintendent of the Northeast Regional Vocational School, and student construction workers broke ground for a new state of the art visitor’s center at Breakheart Reservation. The center, expected to be complete during 2003, is being built through a unique collaborative effort between the MDC and the Northeast Regional Vocational High School.

Breakheart Reservation is a 640-acre hardwood forest with jagged, rocky outcroppings, two fresh-water lakes, and a rambling section of the Saugus River. The new 3,200 square-foot visitor’s center will contain public amenities not currently available at Breakheart, including indoor rest rooms, a kitchen facility and a central great room, designed to be a multipurpose area for community meetings and environmental education activities.

The Saugus River Watershed Council is working with the MDC to develop quality educational displays for the center. The new visitor’s center will increase public opportunities to enjoy and learn about the unique wildlife and natural resources of Breakheart Reservation and the Saugus River watershed.

“We are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to enhance one of our most popular reservations, while providing students at the vocational school with a challenging opportunity”, said Commissioner Balfour.
