Over 70 volunteers joined the Saugus River Watershed Council, State Representative Kathi Reinstein, and GE Aircraft Engines for a major CoastSweep 2001 cleanup project of the Town Line Brook in Revere, Malden and Everett. Revere Mayor Thomas Ambrosino, Revere City Councilor Mark Casella, Malden City Councilor Rich Correale, Butch Gennetti from Malden Mayor Richard Howard’s office, and Larry Gil from the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection joined in to help.

Volunteers worked with staff and equipment provided by GE Aircraft Engines, Metropolitan District Commission, and the Revere Department of Public Works to remove many large items that were stuck in the bottom of the river. By the end of the day close to 10 tons of debris were removed from the area (4 tons of debris were previously removed during a June 2001 cleanup). Shopping carts, an air conditioner, lawn mowers, grills, old fencing, yard waste, a television, carpeting, bicycles, and tires were among the debris removed. RESCO and the City of Revere donated trash disposal services.

The type of debris removed indicates that illegal dumping is a major problem in this area.

Residents and neighbors should call SRWC at (781) 233-5046 to report any license plates associated with dumping activity.

Volunteers included employees of GE Aircraft Engines, students participating in MassPIRG’s Community Water Watch program, SRWC members, and area neighbors. “GE is a strong supporter of local volunteer projects aimed at improving the communities near our Lynn facility, said David Johnson of GE. It’s great when you have employees working as volunteers.”

Local activist and Town Line Brook neighbor, Tony Ciano, receives award from Rep. Kathi-Anne Reinstein, September 2001.

A special award was presented to Revere resident Anthony Ciano, by Rep. Reinstein and the Saugus River Watershed Council, for his commitment to cleaning Town Line Brook and advocating for the new tide gates that were recently installed. “Thanks to the hard work and continuing efforts of volunteers like Mr. Ciano, the Town Line Brook is becoming cleaner and flooding problems have been reduced by the new tide gates”, said State Representative Kathi-Anne Reinstein.

Volunteers enjoyed Honey Dew Donuts contributed by Rep. Reinstein, and Richie’s Slush donated by Revere School Committee member Joseph Giannino. All of the volunteers received t-shirts featuring a beautiful, full-color, shorebird design by local Revere artist Dorothea James.

Special thanks to co-sponsors: Malden Mayor Richard Howard, Malden City Councilor Rich Correale, MA Coastal Zone Management, Mass. Environmental Trust, MDC, RESCO, Revere City Councilor Mark Casella, Revere Mayor Thomas G. Ambrosino, Revere Department of Public Works, and St. Mary’s in Revere.
